Maldir
"May chaos take the world." - Maldir
Greater Deity - Great One
Maldir is a name that typically goes unspoken throughout the world of Helia, as the simple invocation of the chaos god is enough to invite his influence into your life. For this reason, Maldir goes by many names. Most frequently and best fitting is the title of Demon Lord, for at the bottom of the infinite Abyss is where this Great One is trapped. Despite his predicament, Maldir’s influence and grasp on Helia can be felt in all societies. The god of chaos thrives when the world is in turmoil, or when societies are in disarray. He will send warlocks and demons to places with strict order with the hopes that they will spread his decree of madness.
Millennia ago, when the gods feuded and the world took its shape, Maldir seized control over the Abyss and took the lives of several deities. Understanding his power and danger, gods of all pantheons, even rivaling ones, banded together to seal him within the Magnus Profundus, the deepest layer of the Abyss. Several gods died or were stripped of their power, but in the end the Demon Lord was sealed. Today, he remains trapped, constantly scheming and hoping that one day he will be free.
Worshippers of Maldir are understandably few and far between. The only people who praise the One Below All are mad cultists, who usually end up sacrificing too many members to maintain an active following. The way Maldir remains powerful is not out of prayer, but out of reverence. When chaos abounds, people will rebuke Maldir’s name and perform strict rituals to maintain order. Ironically, when this rebuking ritual is performed by a religious figure, Maldir gains more power and influence for the next moment of chaos. The best word of advice, never invite the Demon Lord into your life, no matter how desperate times may be.
