Entry █: Many of our tests have failed to create an understanding of why the specimen was found in its previously explained condition. As of today, all housed organisms have been tested for attraction. To test long term exposure, we will simply be leaving the specimen in the last deceased remains, that being the femur of a human female. As of today, I will be focusing research efforts on other matters, and will only update this log if a breakthrough occurs with the specimen.

Entry ██: We returned to the previously mentioned ruined civilization area with the geology team. Their defense squad along with ours surveyed the area and confirmed the lack of any dangerous creatures nearby. The architecture in this area is foreign to Khuvelite design, and not even the other senior researcher can pinpoint the origin. We have decided that it is best for us to collect as many samples and as much data as possible so that we will not have to return again and risk any more danger.

Entry █: With every test I am left in awe of such a simple specimen's abilities. Today we tested over 300 deceased organisms. My previous assumption of how the specimen determines what it will be attracted to was incorrect. When recording what organisms it was attracted to and when it remained neutral, the resulting data almost exactly aligned with the Saewarean Charter of Living Rights’ assertion of which creatures contain more sentience than others. With only a 0.9% margin of error, the specimen moved towards deceased matter of organisms with higher sentience than those with less. Creatures marked with no sentience resulted in the specimen remaining neutral. Additionally, the specimen was tested with 50 living creatures, either researchers or volunteers. Every test resulted in no movement from the specimen. What this could mean is far more interesting and complex than cellular structure. How can a compound like this understand and differentiate sentience? For now, it may be assumed that the specimen has some form of psychic ability, or possibly even sentience in itself.

Entry █: A survey research team has been approved to return to the discovery site of the specimen, with myself as its leader. In the meantime, I am leaving a separate research team to study the long term effects of the specimen on a nearly completed corpse. While we are out on the expedition, my most trusted assistant, Faith, will be injecting the specimen into the corpse of a deceased gnoll, a creature with a particularly low sentience rating. The corpse is missing 36% of its original bone structure, and we hope that this will be regenerated while we are away. If anything, the specimen could be used as a way to preserve the dead for funerals.

Entry ██: The organization has revoked their endorsement of my work and further dictated that I practice the study of arcana no further. They have deemed that any person who assists me from now on is a threat to the nation and will be arrested. My study, research, and legacy have been scraped from the land. I am to “disappear” under their orders. All I have is my research, the stone tablets, and a full briefcase. Inside I can feel something; a deep desire to be free, to live on. The specimen. It calls to me.

Entry ██: The exploration of this settlement has proven itself to be a rather interesting one. While no signs of any new specimens have been observed, our findings show that this place may be linked to our original research. Multiple terrain samples are being taken back for testing, along with two indecipherable stone tablets. With enough effort, our language translation team should be able to make sense of them. In the meantime, we will be returning back to the discovery site.

Entry ██: Continued application of artificial bone structure has been applied. All limbs and joints have been artificially manufactured, with the specimen accepting them into the skeleton. After another week, the formation of organic ribs, spine, and skull fully manifested. Muscular tissue is beginning to form at the nape of the neck, with organs starting to take shape from the neck down. I will continue to document the regeneration process over time. In the meantime I will be looking for ways to ensure that if consciousness is regained an accident will not occur like before. It will be difficult, but I will try to seek help from practitioners of magic in search of a way to make the final result more amenable.

Entry ██: I have secured myself a place to work in secret. Tomorrow I plan to continue research on the specimen, which means extracting it within the █████████. I have chosen not to go near it for three months, as just the smell is enough to make me sick. Tomorrow, I will push through my sorrow for the sake of the specimen.

Entry ██: Faith is deceased. ██████████ disassembled body strewn across my study, the walls painted in gore. All while a feral gnoll █████████████ limbs in the corner, ██████████ red hair stuck in its teeth like floss. In my horror and rage I charged the creature. Strength that I never knew I had possessed filled my body, and soon the gnoll’s imposing appearance became an unrecognizable collection of viscera. Once the terror subsided, I began to store the pieces of the creature for further research, as the specimen was embedded in its body. Of course, during this act, a senior researcher had entered, watching as my bloodied hands scraped at the collection of flesh on the floor. It was then when I understood why his face looked that way. Not even I could discern the mangled pieces of the gnoll from Faith.

Entry 9: The research team and I have begun the expedition towards the Underdark to the discovery site of the specimen. Among us are 2 senior arcanist researchers, 6 junior researchers, 12 intern assistants, 9 defense contractors, and myself. When we reach the site, the team will split into three groups. One team will focus on studying the geology and any remains of civilization, another will press deeper into the Underdark past the discovery site in order to find more specimens, and I will research the site itself. I will ensure that this expedition not only brings back results, but also brings everyone back home.

Entry 12: After several hours of traveling through these caverns, we have finally caught sights of civilization. Whether it is active or not is yet to be determined. From what we can see now, the area appears to be extremely old and in ruins, but we cannot afford to be careless with a high risk of danger. We have marked this location and plan to travel back tomorrow with the geology team.

Entry 16: It has been six weeks since our arrival in the underdark. At this point our food supply is only enough to ensure a healthy trip back home. Today we begin the return with a sizable amount of research samples. Unfortunately, our language team was unable to translate the discovered tablets and has left them with me. Hopefully as research continues and our knowledge grows, a breakthrough will allow us to progress on them. In other matters, I look forward to the results of our long term exposure experiment with the specimen. I have left one of my most entrusted assistants to observe and document any findings while I was on the expedition, and am very curious to see what she has found.

Entry 40: Day one of discovery site reexamination. I am able to work expeditiously with constructs, and am beginning to prefer it to real people. They do not require sustenance, rest, or management. In a singular day I have been able to establish an operations base as well as sending two constructs for sample acquisition.
