Awakened
Out of the Eternal Day, a new species arose from the remnants of who once lived. Mysteriously, mortals would occasionally rise from the dead and walk among the immortal living. Their bodies would sometimes change due to the years having long passed, but one thing remained consistent among the rise. Each and every one possessed a unique magical ability different from the rest. The world would classify these individuals as an entirely new race: the Awakened.
Many awakened would lose a part of themselves in the process of returning from death. Be it memories, strength, or magical prowess, they often would need to seek out the missing parts of themselves to become whole. These lost pieces are known among awakened groups and racial scholars as Vestiges. They can come in the form of physical items, ideas, memories, or even someone they need to be reacquainted with. Sometimes the missing aspect would be physical, with certain awakened literally appearing as undead with decaying flesh and exposed bone. Once an awakened acquires their Vestiges, they are made whole once more, and typically far more insightful and powerful than in their past life.
Awakened Abilities
All awakened are gifted with an ability entirely unique to them. Their potential power and versatility are a huge factor in how they function in societies. They can range from something as mundane as being able to cast certain cantrips when previously being magically inept, to manipulating the weather. Most abilities come with drawbacks or limits to their use, but all have the potential to be altered into a more advanced state known as an "overflow." The most reliable way to achieve this incredible power is for an awakened to ingest duskblood. This is much easier said than done, as duskblood is incredibly rare. Some awakened have devoted their lives to honing their ability, allowing them to enter an overflow on their own.
